Early this year, a US-based EV manufacturer approached us with an intricate challenge. Not only did they need an automatic prismatic pack assembly line; but one engineered specifically to integrate seamlessly into an American facility as well as comply with OSHA, ANSI, and UL regulations.

At this critical juncture for non-US suppliers entering the US market, many fail. A machine noncompliant with US standards isn't an asset; it's an OSHA risk. Our engineering team's focus lies on three core compliance areas - those considered "make or break" factors for US market entry:

Engineering for ANSI Z136.1 Laser Safety Compliance

In the US, laser safety regulations are administered by OSHA under its Safe Use of Lasers Standard ANSI Z136.1 (ANSI Z136.1).

Experience: Our client was in need of a Class 1 Laser System enclosure to accommodate multiple welding stations. To fulfill this request, we developed an elaborate solution blueprint which included:

Engineered Enclosures: Designing fully interlocked guarding to limit operator exposure.

Certified Viewports: For optimal observation windows, always utilize laser safety glass of OD rating for each observation window.

LSO (Laser Safety Officer) Support: Offering our LSO clients full engineering data packets - with CDRH registration support where applicable- to aid their internal hazard analyses and FDA reporting needs is one way that shows our expertise goes far beyond hardware alone.

Expertise: Addressing the Gap Between UL 508A & NFPA 79 Control Cabinet Standards

This is our most frequently observed problem; CE-marked control cabinets do not meet US mandate. NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery) applies to both panels and machines as an overall standard, so all industrial control panels must comply with it in addition to complying with UL 508A for safety regulations.

Experience: Our solution blueprint tackled this gap directly:

Component Selection: Our design utilized UL-listed components such as breakers, power supplies and contactors from US suppliers who are well-recognized on the market.

SCCR (Short-Circuit Current Rating) Calculations: Our engineers provided full short circuit current rating calculations for this panel - an essential requirement of UL 508A that many fail to consider.

Wire Management (AWG): This blueprint includes detailed wire sizing (AWG not mm2) and color-coding that meets 100% compliance with NFPA 79 standards (i.e. black for AC power, red for AC control).

At our facility, we were offering solutions that were "UL-Ready," demonstrating our expertise to ensure they could be field-certified by an NRTL inspector upon arriving on site.

Conclusion: We Provide Expertise Not Just Equipment

Though this project blueprint did not make it to production, the experience gained was invaluable.

Our engineering team's success at navigating the tangled web of US standards was further cemented with this success story.

We have demonstrated our ability to go beyond basic CE compliance and engineer solutions that meet the stringent requirements of ANSI, NFPA and UL standards.

Experience is our cornerstone when it comes to working with US partners. We stand ready as your engineering partner, ready to design solutions that not only work effectively within their US facility but also adhere to all compliance regulations.
